The now legendary, almost mythical character of Indiana Jones once had a childhood. Every episode starts out with the elderly man that he is in the 1990's getting into a specific situation where he has to tell a story from his past. The stories go back to when he was ten years old and on a world tour with his father, and to his late-teens when he fought in World War I.

Perhaps my memory has blurred over the years or I&#39;m looking upon this series from the point of the view of the child I was when I used to watch it but &#39;The Young Indiana Jones Chronicles&#39; was a rather delightful television series aimed at young fans of the &#39;Indiana Jones&#39; trilogy. The series focuses in on Indy at two stages of his young life. We see a pre-adolescent Indy, between the ages of around ten to twelve, living in far-flung locations as he travels with his archaeologist parents and receives his school lessons from stern but fair governess Miss Seymour. We also see Indy as in his late teens as he becomes more a man than a boy.<br/><br/>Corey Carrier and Sean Patrick Flanery, as little and teenage Indy respectively, give decent performances in their roles. Young Indy is portrayed to be a typical young boy, eager for adventures but, at times, clueless to what is going on around him. The older Indy is more resourceful and self-aware, showing signs of becoming the hero we are familiar with from the films.<br/><br/>There were some rather bland episodes which could have done with more superior script-writing and character depiction. And it would have been a nice touch to focus more on young Indy&#39;s relationship with his parents, particularly since the discord between him and his father is a major storyline in the final film of the trilogy &#39;Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade&#39;. Also, there was no need to have so many cameos from famous historical figures, which cheapened the series slightly since it&#39;s unrealistic to think Indy met so many people who would go down in the history books.<br/><br/>That said, &#39;The Young Indiana Jones Chronicles&#39; was entertaining and offered an interesting insight into the people and events which influenced on Indiana Jones as a child and helped shape him into the man we know in the films. It&#39;s a shame the series isn&#39;t on DVD as it would be good to reminisce on the show which kept me interested in the &#39;Indiana Jones&#39; franchise when I ran out of films to watch.
Sorry but every time I give this show a chance, it bores the crap out of me. I haven&#39;t seen all the episodes. The ones I&#39;ve seen didn&#39;t have Indy chasing after totems with any powers, while that was all the fun of the films. I don&#39;t particularly need to know where Indy came from. I also didn&#39;t think the actors looked or acted anything like Indiana. There&#39;s a reason this show wasn&#39;t a hit. Boring. Lucas and Spielberg should have been developing a 4th Indiana movie at this time, when it was still relatively REMEMBERED by people. Instead this is what we got, while they waited to make the 4th Indy movie after a whole generation of 18 year olds don&#39;t even know who Indiana Jones is. They&#39;re just milking this concept mad hard while only the first film, Raiders, is standing the test of time. How many people even bought Temple and Crusade individually and not part of a box set with Raiders? Indiana Jones was one badass MF when he chased after the Ark. You could drag him behind a truck and put a bullet in his arm and he&#39;d still defeat several Nazis with nothing but his fists. The flaw is that all later films and shows seemed to forget this Indy in order to kiddy it up a little instead. That never works. Look what they did to Die Hard.

Young Indiana Jones (henceforth referred to as YIJ) is a television series based on the characters in the Indiana Jones feature films. The series follows the Indiana Jones character as he was growing up with the adventures he has with various historical people he meets along the way. 32 episodes were filmed in two separate productions for the ABC television network between 1991 and 1993. Additional filming was done at a later time to expand the Palestine 1917 episode into 2 hours. Additional filming was done in 1996 to expand the Curse of the Jackal episode into 2 two hour movies. 4 made for cable movies were filmed for the then U.S. Family channel in 1994. In the U.S the series premiered with good ratings but the ratings quickly dropped. Apparently people expected to see the action packed pure entertainment of the feature films and tuned out when they found something more cerebral. <br/><br/>In an attempt to booster ratings the second production of episodes concentrated on the older Young Indy which had a little more action. Harrison Ford was even brought in for a brief appearance in one episode. These did not help and ABC pulled it from the air in April 1993. During the summer ABC ran some of the unshown episodes. <br/><br/>In other countries YIJ was much better received which might be one of the reasons the Family channel decided to do the movies. In the U.S. four episodes were never shown in their original format. They have since been shown in their re-edited format. In the U.S. YIJ has run on ABC, the USA cable channel, and what is now the ABC Family (formerly called The Fox Family Channel and before that the Family Channel). Also the similar but slightly different U.S. History International Cable Channel is airing both the YIJ episodes and the YIJ documentaries. Those that find the DVDs too expensive to purchase might consider renting them. All of the episodes have been edited into 22 movies for release on video. Twelve of the YIJ videos were released October 26, 1999 along with a re-release of the Indy feature films. Not many places sell the videos anymore but they can be gotten used from places like Amazon listed on the Young Indy links. These 12 videos were released worldwide over the course of 2000. The remaining 10 YIJ videos have never been released. <br/><br/>There were a few episodes from the early episodes released in Japan and the U.K. There was also a boxed laserdisc set of some of the episodes released in Japan. Four volumes were released in the early 90s, as well as a &quot;best-of&quot; CD. There have been several series of YIJ novels. Some have been based on YIJ episodes and some are original stories.
